Elliott Smith è stato uno dei padri fondatori dell’indie-rock cantautorale. L’essere morto – in circostanze misteriose, uno strano suicidio con una pugnalata – nel 2003 a soli 34 anni ne ha reso ancora più intenso il mito, qualora non fosse bastato il grande valore musicale. Comunque è sicuramente tra i miei riferimenti musicali più importanti, e devo molto al suo modo di fare musica. Lui sapeva cosa vuol dire registrare in cameretta con mezzi di fortuna, e anche se arrivò alla notte degli Oscar per la soundtrack di Will Hunting (Genio Ribelle) svestì subito i panni luccicanti e tornò ai suoi timidi concerti acustici, intensi, imprecisi ma sinceri: a testa bassa e con l’inquietudine dentro fino alla fine. Uno dei più grandi cantautori a cavallo tra secondo e terzo millennio.
